^12 days to explore the ancient wonders of Egypt<
“People feel strong energy inside the pyramid,” forewarns Mohammed Bayoumy, an Egyptologist who is my G Adventures guide. “It is the last standing monument of the seven wonders of the ancient world.” He notes that within the conical confines, scientists have discovered a magnetic field that can supposedly cure diseases, sharpen a dull razor in a week and preserve an apple for two weeks unchanged. (Stay tuned.)
For 12 days, it seems like I’m on a movie set as our G Adventures’ small-group tour explores grandiose temples, magnificent tombs, ghostly catacombs and well-preserved dead bodies of Egypt’s extraordinary, sophisticated, age-old civilization.

^Riding 30 mph go-karts at sea? NCL strives for high-energy fun with its new cruise ship<
The ride can last eight laps — if you’re fast enough — with cars speeding up to 30 mph with the aid of a “boost” button on the steering wheel. Cars zip around eight hairpin turns and across two decks. And drivers will inadvertently smash into each other or skid on the hot rubber track.
It’s exhilarating and intense — and that’s exactly what Norwegian Cruise Line was going for when it put the track on its latest ship: Norwegian Bliss.

^Catalina Island beckons with new hiking trails, vestiges of old Hollywood<
My destination: a 76-square-mile fortress of rock that’s marooned 23 miles off the coast of Los Angeles.
Catalina is one of eight of the Channel Islands, and it’s the only one with a significant civilian population. Latest figures put the number around 4,000 people, almost all of them clustered in the port of Avalon.

^Best way to see Niagara Falls is up close<
A great introduction to the Niagara Falls is from the water with a tour from Niagara Cruises. Voyage to the Falls boat tour visits Great Gorge, American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and the most famous, Horseshoe Falls. Whether you decide to see the falls in the daylight, illuminated at night, or both, there is no better way than floating up close to the massive wall of moving water.

^The world’s most beautiful boulevards find favor with ‘flaneurs’<
But Westley and his ilk do have a purpose: they participate in a city by observing the quotidian flow of street life. Sometimes you can learn more about a place just by watching daily interactions along its thoroughfares than by visiting its monuments and museums, not that there’s anything wrong with museums or monuments.

^How does Carnival track its cruise ships? New high-tech center relies on big data<
Next time a storm threatens, the task will be easier, thanks to a new, state-of-the-art fleet operations center that tracks weather, ship location, engine performance, fuel supplies, safety systems and dozens of other data points from all 26 ships in the Carnival fleet, plus outside sources such as the Coast Guard and the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration.

^That free frequent flyer seat may be easier to book. Here’s why<
American Airlines showed the biggest improvement, rising from the bottom of the pack to ninth in the annual survey, with members of its AAdvantage program able to book reward seats on more than 82 percent of flights, up nearly 28 percentage points from last year.
Overall reward availability for the 25 airlines surveyed increased to 73.6 percent, up 1.2 percentage points from last year.

^Travel dilemmas: Before you drive off, here are a few tips<
Real ID, an update: By now, you’re aware that you’ll need a federally compliant form of identification to board a domestic flight starting Oct. 1, 2020. For domestic flights, you can still use your California driver’s license until that date.
After that, you need to carry a different form of ID or have a federally compliant driver’s license, which California began issuing Jan. 22.
