Earn Qantas Points for recycling coffee cups

Posted on November 13, 2017 by Rewards

The airline has partnered with Simply Cups to reward small businesses when they recycle.

To celebrate and raise awareness for National Recycling Week, Qantas is rewarding its business frequent flyers with points every time they recycle their coffee cups. Qantas Business Rewards has partnered with Simply Cups to drive the initiative.

There aren’t any recycling facilities in Australia that recycle coffee cups because the paperboard cups have a plastic lining to prevent leakage that can’t be recycled. Simply Cups has created a technology to separate this liner from the cups and will be commissioning a recycling facility early next year.

So, Qantas Business Rewards can earn Qantas Points with Simply Cups in three ways:

  • 1 Qantas Point for every two Simply Cups branded (or co-branded) coffee cups purchased
  • 1 Qantas Point for every two coffee cups collected and recycled (where available) by Simply Cups
  • 1,000 Qantas Points for each Simply Cups collection container purchased.

“We’ve got a network of 175,000 companies within our Qantas Business Rewards program and as an advocate of recycling and the work that Simply Cups is doing, we are excited to help our members get involved and reward them for doing so as an added incentive,” said head of Qantas Business Rewards Eric Jelinek.

Not only could this be a great way to help the environment and reduce wastage, it’s also a worthwhile way for small businesses to earn Qantas Points. A medium-sized cafe uses an average of 150,000 cups each year. If these cafes purchased cups through Simply Cups, they could earn more than 75,000 Qantas Points per year on coffee cups alone.

“As a busy café in the heart of Sydney, we serve more than 300,000 coffees a year and with most of our customers ordering takeaways, we’re really conscious of what happens to those cups once they finish their last sip. When we heard about the Simply Cups program, we instantly jumped on board and began ordering our cups through them so we can do our bit to help the environment,” said Bill Rossini, owner of Rossini Australia Square. “Getting rewarded for recycling, as a Qantas Business Rewards member, made it a no brainer as it means we’re also now earning Qantas Points on costs we already have to pay for.”

Even if you don’t own a cafe or restaraunt that uses coffee cups, corporate offices can also earn rewards by purchasing recycling tubes and collecting cups from colleagues.
