In a recent announcement from Overwatch League, the team outlined a new viewership system within Twitch. This was something we had heard about for a while. However, it looks like Stage 2 will have an active system. Here are the details.
Today the Overwatch League and Twitch are announcing a series of programs that represent the future of the online experience for esports fans. Overwatch viewers on Twitch can not only share their fandom with others, but earn League Tokens just for watching, and unlock rewards and insider content.
Overwatch League Cheering
Overwatch League Cheering is a feature unique to Twitch that allows fans to unlock in-game skins, exclusive emotes and team-themed items while encouraging their favorite teams and players by Cheering with Bits, a virtual item offered by Twitch. Benefits include in-game hero skins that will be exclusive for a period of time, as well as emotes and team-branded items. A Cheer leaderboard also tracks top Cheerers to show who’s the biggest fan.
Earn League Tokens Just For Watching
Overwatch League viewers can earn League Tokens while enjoying the action by linking their Blizzard Battle.net account with their account on Twitch, MLG.com or OverwatchLeague.com. Viewers earn one (1) League Token per live map finish, and a percentage of viewers who view the conclusion of the final map during the live broadcast will randomly be awarded 100 League Tokens – enough for one team skin.
At launch, the League Tokens rewards program is available to PC, Xbox One® and PlayStation®4 system players in Argentina, Canada, Chile, Denmark, France, Germany, New Zealand, Norway, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the United States. The rewards program may be coming soon to additional countries, and will run through the end of the inaugural season of the Overwatch League.
Twitch is currently developing a VIP ticket to the best of the Overwatch League that unlocks even more in-game items, behind-the-scenes video content on Twitch, and plenty of other perks to be announced.
“Today’s news illustrates Twitch’s commitment to bringing the best possible experience to our Overwatch League fans,” said Mike Minton, Sr. Director, Commerce, Twitch. “With Twitch’s exclusive Cheering feature, fans can express their team pride as they unlock exclusive items, while the viewer rewards program lets them earn League Tokens that build on that pride with Overwatch League home-team skins. More innovations are in the pipeline, but it’s already a one-of-a-kind approach that will resonate with fans who want the ultimate live shared experience online.”
